“A dream is just a dream. A goal is a dream with a plan and a deadline.”
— Harvey MacKay
I am a fan of lists, notebooks and Office Depot but I am not one of those super focused and mega driven people. I am a melancolic and sometimes there are more emotions involved that I’d like.
For me everything is personal, this is good and bad since what I do is an extension of who I am and nothing can’t be just random.
Recently I was feeling frustrated of my health goal which is lose the last extra 20 pounds. Little by little I found myself going to the gym less or making excuses not to go.
I normally go to the gym at 10AM so its never crowded and I go to a really expensive fancy gym so it’s always nice and clean. There is not a valid excuse but I started to analyze why I was feeling discouraged.
My routine consisted in grabbing an old shirt, shorts and worn out sneakers and perform my workout and get it out of the way for the day. There I will encounter people who are more fit, I will be struggling with 15 lb barbell and a girl will use 45 lb next to me without breaking a sweat.
This is not a fair comparison I was fairly new at working out than most of them but its hard to be on a room full of experts when you’re just a newbie. They seemed more professional than what me.
One day out of an impulse at a Nike Store I bought new workout clothes, this meant sneakers, shirts, shorts, socks, jackets, sweaters, yup everything with an “s” at the end because the employee earns a good comission with my purchase.
Sometimes we reward ourselves with indulgences only when we reach the goal. But sometimes reaching the goal is a struggle itself.
“Sometimes You’ve to Fake it ‘til you make it.”
The unexpected purchase brought an impressive change. I’ll get excited about going to the gym, will go with a better attitude, I felt I was part of “the team” who looked the part. I started to challenge myself more and stopped comparing myself to others.
Instead of waiting until I’ve reached my goal to get new clothes, this advancement enabled me to get movitation to work harder on my goal everyday.
Plenty has been written about goals and milestones but what about enablers of those goals? Those simple changes that can helps us get there when the journey is long and hard?
