What I Learned from Ashton Kutcher at the TechCrunch 50
The first thing I thought was “Dude where’s your GPS, you’re lost!” but Ashton attended the TechCrunch 50 to present Blah Girls, what I’ve learned is:
- Take advantage of your resources. If fame is what you’ve, use it on your advantage.
- Network with other people with your advantages. Ashton partner up with Jason Goldberg to start Katalyst Media. The company has been responsible for TV shows such as Beauty and the Geek and Punk’d, and movies including Guess Who and The Butterfly Effect.
- Cash in early. Blah Girls’ Katalyst Media new startup only shows Vitamin Water ads and is featured on the show (yup, no Google AdSense here). But here is the good part, they partner with Todd Goldman, creator of David and Goliath so they also sell Blah Girls merchandise - and become full of new opportunities. Why hit a run, if you can hit a home run?
- Make them listen. Hollywood will be paying attention (no geek can get that media coverage just to show up at a party). If that’s not enough, he will get the word out partnering up with an entrepreneur who is already making more than US$ 90 million in sales each year (no rocket science here). And FTW, show up with your hot wife to the party full of geeks (by the end of the night they’ll want to be like you).
- Be sure to have something worth of listening and consuming, be humble of new territories and have fun.
This is what I’ve learned and inspired me. While a wife like Demi is not my only motivation :), it got me moving. There’s always something I can start doing NOW, with the resources I’ve.

Great points there. One thing i think you should’ve also included though is that you have to know where your new product is in the landscape you are venturing in to. To be honest Blah Girls isn’t anything revolutionary it is just about good marketing, big names and correct demographics, the interactivity part has been around for a while and is very simple and should actually be expanded upon. If he was anyone else this wouldn’t have even got demopit consideration but he took advantage of the resources available to him (as you pointed out) and presented this to a room full of geeks.
